LIVERPOOL St Helens are champions of Counties 1 ADM Lancashire and Cheshire League and are promoted to Regional 2 North West.

A Championship won for the first time since 2006/7 sees LSH return to Level 6 rugby and to do battle with former adversaries such as Firwood Waterloo, Altrincham Kersal, Birkenhead Park, Rochdale and Vale of Lune.

However, nothing was certain until the very last kick of a close fought game when the Widnes conversion, with the score 29-27, went happily wide, sparking huge celebrations amongst the Moss Lane crowd.

As for the game itself, as always against Widnes, it was tough encounter with not a lot between the sides.

An early Matty Wood penalty opened the LSH account before Widnes replied with a penalty try.

This was followed by a break from Rob Sexton, finding Connor Thompson in support to touch down, converted by Wood, before the visitors crossed just before half time at 10-12.

LSH kicked off the second half having been well reminded of what was at stake.

The response was immediate when after a fine break down the left, Wood found Jake Dickinson, who sliced through the cover defence to score, converted, to take LSH into a 17-12 lead, extended soon after with a Wood penalty.

Widnes then broke out from their own line to score a converted try to make it a one pointer, after which Wood slotted three more penalties with Widnes replying with one to keep them in touch.

In a frantic finish, Widnes scored a try with the last touch of the game, and as the conversion sailed wide into the farmer’s field. the Moss Laners’ well-deserved celebrations began.

Later on, reflecting on the day’s events, Head Coach Andy Northey admitted to an overwhelming feeling of relief.

“When you are with a bunch of guys like these, you just want them to do well," he said.

"I am absolutely delighted for them, they are all mates and work hard for each other, and particularly pleased for everyone involved in the club, and can’t wait for the challenge that next season will bring."

LSH have one final League game next Saturday at Aspull. 3pm.
