AT around 3.45pm on Saturday afternoon at a newly floodlit Moss Lane, as the Aldwinians kicker stepped up to take a 40 yard penalty to win the game for the visitors, it is fair to say that a decent sized crowd held their breath.

Not quite true though, as quite a few were engaged in hotly disputing the award of the penalty in the first place whilst others were bemoaning the fact that the referee had clearly not seen an alleged infringement by the visitor’s scrum half.

Situation normal then at the end of a tremendous game of rugby featuring eight tries, lots of open play, a good spirit and no cards.

The Aldwinians kicker had earlier failed in five conversion attempts, but of course this one went over to clinch the game 31-30 for the visitors.

A side that came back from being 22 points down with 20 minutes to go, scoring four tries in the process, deserved to win, even though it was hard on LSH having produced the better rugby and bossed the game for almost an hour.

St Helens Star:

In that time Matthew Wood had scored two tries and kicked two penalties and two conversions after the visitors had ran in an early try and a penalty, reluctantly landed by the lad who was later to become the hero, after a mix up in calling their decision, to give LSH a 20-8 lead at half time.

Another Wood penalty and an opportunist try from Matty Rabette boosted the lead in the second half before the visitor’s remarkable comeback was launched.

St Helens Star:

As one wag in the crowd observed, “Someone switched the floodlights on and LSH went out!"

And that just about sums it up. Ultimately though, this was a day when rugby was definitely the winner.

On Saturday LSH are away at Aspull 2.15pm.
