SAINTS’ unbeaten under 19s side will be looking to crown a remarkable season when they tackle their Wigan counterparts in Sunday’s Grand Final at Langtree Park (2pm).

Derek Traynor’s boys finished top of the pile at a canter, winning all 20 of their league games before beating Widnes 46-6 in the semi-finals.

But now they have the big one as they aim to win the title they last won in 2008 and they are not counting any chickens.

Traynor said: “What we have done all season will do nothing for us on Sunday. We have got to focus on being ready for the big game on Sunday and not let the hype of it being a Grand Final bother us.

“It is a game against another team at this level. We have just got to carry on doing what we have been doing.

“It is great for the lads.

“We are very hopeful that we will get some first team players out of these and I am sure you will see some of them next year in the first team and in years to come.

“Some of them won’t go on and be first teamers and so this might be the peak of their careers.

“It is good for those lads, whoever they may be.”

Traynor said that preparation for this one will be the same as the previous 21 wins so far this season, training Tuesday and Thursday and doing the captain’s run on Saturday morning.

The team will have their shirts presented to them by head coach Keiron Cunningham and captain Jon Wilkin.

The stage is set for the team to showcase their talents in front of a home crowd.

“Saints v Wigan games are always great.

“We worked hard to get a home draw and it is up to us to make that pay now.

“It is a big day for the lads and it would be great if the Saints speccies could come and cheer them on and have a look at the players that could be first teamers in the future,” he said.

What has made the success so far even more remarkable has been the adversity they have faced in losing key players to injury - and Morgan Knowles to the senior squad.

“During the season we have not had Matty Lees for a while, Matty Richardson missed a chunk but is back now, Josh Eaves did, now Rob Fairclough and Jonah Cunningham are out.

“They are lads who are leaders in the squad, but others have jumped in and filled the gap the best they can.

“And they have done it well enough to keep the winning run going,” Traynor said.
