LUKE Walsh pulled the strings after a procession of rotated packmen laid the platform for Saints to get their Super League XXI campaign off to a winning start.

It was a fine win, but one that may have been achieved at some cost with James Roby led off straight down the tunnel early in the second half with what coach Keiron Cunningham later explained was a rib injury.

Apart from that, the evening went to plan with Saints executing their mission to the letter.

The coach no doubt raised a few eye-brows when he left out Theo Fages and went with a bench of four big men.

But facing a big Giants unit, in such horrible conditions, and factor in both wings and Alex Walmsley were returning to the fold without any real pre-season, the way the substitutes rolled on and off was essential.

St Helens Star:

It worked too, with Saints effectively pummelling the Giants into submission with unsung front rower Kyle Amor producing a strong and steady display, complemented by the bursts of those around him.

Loose forward Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook put himself about, and just when he was tiring Luke Thompson came on, charging in like Popeye with some powerful, direct running..

Saints will be relieved to get over this hurdle and to do so quite comfortably making sure there was no repetition of the opener in 2013 when Huddersfield stunned them 40-4.

Saints opened the scoring on seven minutes when Mark Percival touched down skipper Jon Wilkin’s perfect kick, but Walsh missed the touchline conversion.

Huddersfield responded, with big men Ukuma Tai’ai and Sam Rapira taking some stopping, and Jamie Ellis and Danny Brough kicked deep.

The Giants were rewarded with a try from Aaron Murphy on 13 minutes.

Saints held out from a Brough 40-20 and then went up to the other end where 80-minute man Atelea Vea dribbled the ball over the line from Walsh's fine kick.

St Helens Star:

Saints responded when old pals Jack Owens and Mark Percival combining, with the latter stepping inside full back Scott Grix’s tackle for his second of the night three minutes before half time break.

The Giants tapped two kickable penalties just before the break, seeking the try but Saints held them out and they then saw Grix's attacking kick roll over the dead ball line.

Huddersfield lost skipper Brough with a deadleg.

And when Turner took route one to force his way over for his 100th career try after 48 minutes, goaled by Walsh, 22-4 looked like it was all over.

But the powerful Ta'ai scored a fortuitous one for Huddersfield and then Roby went off injured.

That did not herald the start of a slide and McCarthy-Scarsbrook tapped back a Walsh kick for Thompson power over to make it 28-10.

Huddersfield's Grix was led off with a shoulder injury from that play but they never threw the towel in and were rewarded with Jake Connor's try from ex-Saint Ellis’s kick.

Saints had the last word when Walsh chipped over a late penalty to complete a productive nigh for the Australian number seven.
