IN A memorable contest, West Park produced a magnificent team performance which saw them dominate Bowdon’s considerably bigger pack, allowing their free-flowing backs ample ball to net a total of six tries, giving the team a much deserved maximum five league points in the 35-12.

The home side’s front eight took only minutes to impose themselves in the game, pushing the opposition pack back some 35 yards in a forward drive which resulted in a try finally touched down by full back Matt Savage wide out.

The visitors regrouped and enjoyed a considerable amount of possession, only for their efforts to be constantly thwarted by Park’s exemplary tackling and their usual attacking prowess with ball in hand.

These skills were soon to prove decisive as a lineout well won by captain Rob Morley saw the ball moved swiftly across the backs to winger Matt Appleton who touched down in the corner for a try which again went unconverted.

The half-time score of 10-0 adequately reflected the equality of the contest up to that point, but the second half promised, and indeed delivered more skilful rugby, particularly from West Park’s eager young squad.

Further tries came to Appleton, Martin Kimberley, and captain Rob Morley was next on the score sheet dummying his way over past a dispirited opposition, and although this try too was not converted, Matt Savage soon afterwards opened his place kicking account with a well taken penalty.

The home side’s final try was perhaps their best as tireless flanker Lewis Whitty came into the line at speed, feeding winger and man of the match Matt Appleton, who once again sidestepped his opposite number with ease to register his hat-trick. Savage converted from the touchline, but Bowdon continued to press and were rewarded on the final whistle with a try in the corner, though this too was not converted.
