THIS photo of two Saints legends in action was sent to Whalley’s World by reader Mr B. Derbyshire of Lyon Close, St Helens, along with a plea for information.
The shot, taken at Knowsley Road some time in the late 1950s or early 1960s, shows Springbok wing wizard, Tom van Vollenhoven with ball in hand, trying to evade the clutches of a would-be tackler, with the mercurial Alex Murphy in support.
And our correspondent writes: “What I would like to know is, who were Voll and Murph playing for in the photo. I cannot ever remember Saints playing in an all-white strip as long as I have been watching them.
I wonder if any of your readers can come up with an answer.”
Over to you folks...
