SPORTING tributes have been paid to a teenage Newton-le-Willows footballer who has died.

Sam Ashworth was a member of Newton-le-Willows FC who took to social media to announce his passing.

Via a public Facebook post on their page, the club said: “Newton-le-Willows JFC are deeply saddened to announce the passing of U16 player Sam Ashworth.

“Sam joined our club as a 7-year-old boy starting his football journey with the U8 Dynamos.

“Sam’s dignity and braveness shone through. Over the last few weeks he was able to enjoy many activities with his teammates, a testament to the Dynamos team and their families.

“They truly supported Sam and his family through this terrible time. Memories have been made for all to last a lifetime.

“Our thoughts are with Sam’s family during this extremely difficult time.

“Sam is forever a Dynamo and forever a part of Newton-le-Willows FC.”

More than 100 people took to the comments of the post to pay tribute to Sam, and his favourite sports team Wigan Athletic also posted a tribute to him via X (Twitter), which read:

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Latics supporter, Sam.

“Sam inspired everyone who was lucky enough to meet him, through his courage, bravery and positivity.

“He will be forever in our hearts, and our thoughts are with Sam’s family and friends.”
