WHEN it’s the Summer holidays, with on-and-off rain, and you are staying in the UK you go to the apparent spots quickly and by the last few weeks, we were running out of ideas.

I got a press invite to attend WWT Martin Mere, and even though I wasn’t sure what to expect, I know my two-year-old loves animals of all kinds and it might be worth a visit.

In Burscough, it’s just 30 mins away from St Helens, and an easy drive and when we arrived we were pleasantly surprised with sunny weather and a great day out for all of us.

First off you arrive and the main building has a living roof, something my son thought was like the Teletubbies house – so that was a win before we even got through the doors.

Our visit saw us visit bird species of all kinds, including the vibrant flamingos, a very grumpy swan and gorgeous otters (definitely my highlight) as well as taking in the gorgeous surroundings of the wetlands.

The hides dotted around the vast venue, which are open to the public, give sight of breathtaking natural beauty and wildlife and as long as you pack your wellies (thank you English weather) you are fine to take in the lovely trails rain or shine – which my son definitely loved, including picking up many sticks.

There is the option of a boat ride through the wetlands, which we missed out on due to a toddler tantrum, but that’s life with a toddler and gives us a good reason to return in the future.

The Lakeside Café is situated on the edge of the lake which is full of birds of all kinds, including a very curious duck and her duckling who were walking on the outside eating deck checking if anyone was willing to spare a crumb.

The food was lovely, toasties and cakes with lovely hot drinks – my little boy had a child’s lunch box which was a cheese spread/ham/jam sandwich with some crisps, a piece of fruit and a PIP organic juice which was very affordable and was much needed after chasing after birds all day.

Finally, we ended our trip at the fantastic play area. The wooden play area features a swing, climbing ropes, tree house style climbing structure with enclosed metal slide (too big for my little one, but older kids were having a great time on it) and a smaller play area on sand suitable for younger children.

My son’s favourite though was an area where there was a pump that squirted out a lot of water from overhead – which I’m sure will be very welcome on sunny days, and a fountain that also spat out water when operated by a control from the other side.

They also have a children's craft room and a gift shop - which we didn't use this time sadly just due to lack of time as we spent so much time running round and enjoying the play area.

A beautiful family day out, not too far from home and surrounded by gorgeous views – a big positive for parents who are all too familiar with the bright colours of soft play centres after the summer holidays of on/off rain showers.

For a family of two adults and up to six children or grandchildren, it’s £8.75 a month and includes unlimited access to all of our wetland centres and as we run lots of free events throughout the year.

Family day admission prices are £43.18 for two adults and two children, so something to consider if like us, you are desperate to find a new favourite place to hang out with active toddlers.
