WE’VE had a very royal month already with King Charles III's Coronation, and Prescot secured its own Royal visit today as the Duke of Edinburgh arrived to officially unveil a plaque at Shakespeare North.

Prince Edward, who has recently been given the title that was formerly that of his father Prince Philip, arrived at the new multi-million pound arts venue.

St Helens Star:

He was shown around the incredible site including the iconic cockpit theatre by Max Steinberg CBE DL, the chairman of the Shakespeare North Trust and playhouse chief executive, Melanie Lewis.

He also met St Helens and Whiston MP Marie Rimmer, the High Sherriff of Merseyside, Dr Ruth Hussey; Lord and Lady Derby and Lady Anne Dodd and other dignitaries.

St Helens Star:

His good humour and wit saw him converse with dignitaries and Shakespeare North volunteers as well as members of the project and creative teams at the site.

Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, said: “I really wanted to see the place myself. This has been a 20 year long concept and congratulations to everyone who has been involved in this project.

St Helens Star:

“What’s really exciting is creating a place like this in the community like this and seeing that community respond to that.

“I wish you the very best of luck.”

Melanie Lewis, chief executive of Shakespeare North Playhouse added: “It has been a pleasure to welcome His Royal Highness today.

"His Royal Highness shares our belief that arts and culture can be transformative to both place and people and so, it has been wonderful to introduce him to the team, share our achievements and our aspirations for Shakespeare North Playhouse.

St Helens Star:

His Royal Highness heard all about our bold and brave nature and how across the organisation we embody that Elizabethan flare for boundary pushing, making culture accessible to all. It was a joy to share just a few of our highlights including the work we do with young people so he could witness the immediate impact it has.”
