REPORTS of up to 50 youths gathering in a park at night and an increase in anti-social behaviour has led to police stepping up patrols.

Officers will focus attention on Taylor Park, Sutton Park, Sherdley Park and Alexandra Business Park.

Recent reports have included a group of up to 50 teenagers at Taylor Park, drinking alcohol and intimidating members of the public.

One individual, who contacted the Star, said: "In Taylor Park this afternoon my two children, aged seven and 12, were verbally abused by kids riding past on bikes. We will never go there again after this.

"I will travel from now on to keep my children away from these animals who think this type of behaviour is socially acceptable."

Neighbourhood Inspector Elaine Collins said: "Following reports of groups of people gathering and consuming alcohol, including a group of teenagers at 7pm in Taylor Park on Friday (May 13), there will be increased patrols focusing attention on the parks at key times of the day."

Dispersal zones, which gave police powers to move on groups, were in operation from 6pm on Friday to 6pm on Sunday in Taylor Park and Alexandra Business Park.

The dispersal zones have been brought in under Section 34 of the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 which gives police powers to tell people they suspect are causing or likely to cause crime to leave the area for up to 48 hours.

If a person who has been asked to leave the area returns during the period of the dispersal notice, this could lead to an arrest.

Insp Collins added: "As the nights get lighter and days get warmer our focus on all forms of anti-social behaviour will be increasing, particularly anti-social behaviour taking place in and around parks in St Helens.

"I want to reassure people that we will not tolerate those who continue to make life difficult for decent people in our communities."
