A MAN has been charged by police investigating an assault that has left doctors battling to save a man's sight.

Scott Martin Owens, of Ellison Drive, St Helens was charged with section 18 wounding and remanded in custody and appeared at Sefton Magistrates Courth this morning (Monday, November 30).

The 21-year-old was arrested following the incident in St Helens in the early hours of Saturday (28 November 2015).

At about 5.15am on Saturday a passing police patrol spotted two men, one of whom was believed to be unconscious and the other also appeared to have suffered minor injuries on William Street.

One of the men, a 28-year-old partially sighted man, sustained multiple fractures to his face, a possible broken jaw and a fractured eye socket and could lose the sight in his good eye.

He has been moved to a specialist eye unit.

A 21-year-old man, from St Helens, has been arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent and is being interviewed at a police station in Merseyside.

DI Paul Grounds said: "We are aware there were a number of people in the vicinity at the time of the incident and would appeal to anyone who saw anything, however insignifcant they may think it is, to contact police. 

"We will act on all information we are given."
