The officer who led the murder investigation, Detective Chief Inspector Sue Coombs said: "We note the sentence issued to Amanda O’Shaughnessy today. On behalf of Merseyside Police I would like to offer my sincere condolences to Mr Butterworth’s family.

"I know from my dealings with David’s family that he is very sadly missed by his family, friends and work colleagues.

"O’Shaughnessy brutally attacked Mr Butterworth in the home they shared with a large kitchen knife, leaving him with terrible injuries which tragically proved fatal.

"Her actions not only deprived David of the life ahead of him when he was only 38-years-old, but also took him away from his beloved family who have been left devastated.

"Merseyside Police takes incidents of a domestic nature extremely seriously and I hope that the prison sentence O’Shaughnessy is now facing sends a strong message out to other violent offenders that we will do everything possible to bring you to justice.

"I would like take this opportunity to thank the investigation team for their commitment and tenacity in preparing this case for court and Crown Prosecution Service staff, who have provided support in this investigation."
