DETECTIVES have urged the public to come forward with information about two burned out cars following a shooting that happened during a high speed chase.

A 24-year-old man suffered serious injuries to his back, shoulder and elbow following the incident which started in Lyneham in Whiston nearly two months ago.

Shots were fired before two cars, a VW Passat and a black Audi sped off along Driveway and into Copperwood Drive where there were further shots. There were reports of more shots being fired as the cars were being driven between the two locations.

Police confirmed that the Passat, which the shooting victim was a passenger in, was later found parked at Whiston Hospital with damage to the rear window.

Another man, aged 21, who was also in the same car was injured but his injuries were not described as serious.

The shooting happened on the evening of Friday, April 10

Detective Inspector Mike Leyland said: "We are treating this incident as targeted and while we are exploring a number of positive lines of enquiry and have made several arrests we still need the assistance of the public to trace those responsible for this shooting.

"I'm especially keen to hear from anyone who has any information about a BMW X5 which appears to have been set on fire near Domville prior to the shooting.

"At this stage it is unclear if it was linked to the shooting but we'd appeal to anyone who has any information about this incident to get in contact.

"My officers also recovered a burned out black Audi on Baileys Lane in Hale village on Sunday, April 12. Again I'd ask anyone who witnessed this incident or anyone who has any information about it to get in contact. Both cars have been recovered.

"People who are prepared to fire guns in a residential area during the early evening when members of the public are going about their day-to-day business have a complete and utter disregard for the consequences of their actions.

"Local residents are quite rightly shocked by what happened and we will endeavour to bring the people involved in this type of behaviour to justice. The actions of those involved are reckless in the extreme.

"We need to find all those involved. We will relentlessly pursue criminals who use guns and violence on our streets and intimidate or harm other people but we need the public's help.

"If you have any information at all that can help the police investigation please call 0800 230 0600, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

Seven people have been arrested and bailed in connection with this incident.
