IT was a day for remembering fallen colleagues for one proud veteran as the country marked the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe.

Wilfred Simm took his rightful place in a procession of veterans who attended a ceremony in London on Sunday, May 10.

The 95-year-old from Newton was a member of the Royal Engineers throughout the war and saw action at Normandy before being stationed in Lubeck in Germany.

He travelled to London to take part in the VE Day commemorations with daughter Janice Bridge.

She said: "It was a fabulous day and he really enjoyed it. The crowd was six deep as they marched past and they were cheering and applauding. It was a wonderful experience because I think he felt recognised for what he did. People seemed really appreciative.

"Then we went to St James Park where the British Legion organised a private event. Prince Charles was there along with David Cameron. Dad is quite quiet and is only now telling stories of the war like the time he helped break a spy ring in Scotland and on D Day when he was the last off a boat that was shelled."
