A STUDENT credited with starting an online campaign expressing fandom for the Labour leader, Ed Miliband, which has attracted widespread attention among teenagers, has denied reports she is from St Helens.

The 17-year-old founder, who according to the Guardian newspaper is an A level student named Abby, informed the Star she is not from St Helens after national reports claimed she was.

She started the hashtag #milifandom on Twitter. It became a trending topic on the network on Tuesday and led to a surge of teenage backing for Miliband.

Abby wants to protect her identity to stop her Tory voting parents finding out about the campaign, reported the Guardian, which added that she was studying A levels in St Helens.

“The thing is my parents really hate Ed Miliband,” Abby told the Guardian. “I will probably have to break it to them eventually, but I want to hold off as long as possible,” she said. “I think they have voted Tory in the past, but I don’t know who they’ll vote this time.”

According to the Guardian, Fandoms are usually reserved for the likes of Justin Bieber and One Direction, but "scores of young women and girls are sharing their affection for the Labour leader under #milifandom".

Abby has been taken aback by the interest in #milifandom and now has more than 17,000 followers on Twitter.

She joined the Labour party two weeks and insists that #milifandom was her idea and not led by the party.

She added: “Ed Miliband is often presented quite badly in the media.

“I think that’s really unfair, because no one actually looks at his policies. They just look at a picture of him eating a bacon sandwich and think, ‘I don’t want that guy’. I want to change "
