SAINTS fans are being advised to speak to stewards if they are offended by any foul language or offensive abuse hurled at players during fixtures at Langtree Park.

It comes after season ticket holder David Hughes contacted the Star to express his disgust at the behaviour of some supporters in front of children during last Friday's humbling defeat to Leeds.

Saints fell to their fourth defeat in five games, beaten 16-41, but are still second in the Super League table.

Mr Hughes comments, which featured on the Star's website on Monday, provoked a strong debate among supporters. Some are concerned it tarnishes the family image the sport works hard to promote, but others argue bad language on the terraces is part and parcel of sporting passion.

After being contacted by the Star, the club said that under ground regulations people can be ejected for swearing.

In his letter Mr Hughes wrote: "Whilst not being a snob or prude I consider myself to be open minded and have had a season ticket at Saints, at Knowsley Road and now Langtree Park.

"On Friday at the Leeds game I was shocked and disgusted at the foul language used by 'Saints Supporters' directed at two players in particular.

"While Saints were not at their best and beaten by a better team on the night this was no excuse for the language being used.

"I attend with my son, a young adult who was also upset. Around us in the West Stand were young children and women as well. I have been encouraging my wife to attend but now I am unsure.

"It made me feel like leaving the stadium as I couldn't attract stewards attention to this fact. Perhaps, I should have left early.

"If the language was a result of alcohol or not it is not acceptable in a family sport. I also wonder whether these so called 'Saints Fans' react differently when we reach Grand Finals, etc.

"I was upset and ashamed of these so called fans and although I am sure nothing can be done about this I felt I had to send this email."

A club spokesman added that the stewards do keep an eye out for people using offensive language and supporters should raise their concerns if they are offended.
