A FATHER who has flown out to Mexico for pioneering cancer treatment after loved ones raisiec nearly £24,000 of funding says he has the mantra of Steve Prescott in mind.

Paul, 39, was devastated after being told in March his bladder cancer had spread to three different places and was inoperable.

However, refusing to give up hope Paul and his family launched an appeal, featured on the Star, for treatment overseas.

Thousands of pounds have been raised as a community rallied with fundraising events including a walk from Anfield to Langtree Park, and people taking part in activities including a skydive and a marathon.

When Paul, from Sutton, flew out last Saturday to Mexico with both of his parents, it was a poignant day for his wife Julie and four children.

“A few of us went to Manchester as he flew out and it was an emotional day,” said Paul’s brother-in-law John Wright.

“Paul and Julie have never been apart and this is the first time. He has since been on the phone to Julie and it was very emotional.

“Julie has read Steve Prescott’s book and they are big Saints fans and I said to Paul looking at what Steve did with that illness can only give you more hope. He beat the cancer and that itself is massive.

“The people of St Helens have been absolutely brilliant. I have never felt prouder to come from the town, it’s been fantastic around Sutton and Clock Face and the town as a whole has been really good. This is the reason we weren’t going to stop or give up.”

The family has almost reached its £24,000 target to cover Paul’s treatment which he started on Monday morning includes hypothermia, having his blood oxygenated and using cannabis oil.

“There are six or seven different treatments he has at 9am as an outpatient so he can enjoy the Mexican sunshine. The aim is to get him into the first step of remission," added John, 40.

A gig has also been organised at the Sidac Social Club on Friday, May 8 featuring singer Alison D and raffles and auctions. Tickets will be £5 each. Visit the 'Team Gannon Fundraising 2015' or contact John on 07725086896.
