PUPILS at Sutton Oak Primary dug in to help plant trees at their school.

The whole school put their green fingers to good use to plant 420 saplings on the school grounds including elder and hazel trees as part of a project organised by The Woodland Trust.

The children will take it on themselves to ensure the maintenance of the trees, which have transformed the outlook of the school grounds.

And the project has taught the children about the importance of caring for the environment.

Head teacher, Iwan Williams, said: "Everyone had such a great time planting the trees and the children are so proud of their efforts. We are now all looking forward to watching the trees grow into a beautiful creation.”

St Helens Council's cabinet member for schools and lifelong learning, Councillor, Sue Murphy, added: "It is wonderful to see the children show so much enthusiasm in planting the trees in what is a fun yet educational task.

"By taking care of the trees, the children will gain responsibility and learn about the importance off appreciating the environment."
