CHILDREN have been getting into the spirit for World Book Day as libraries across the borough host a series of sessions to mark the event.

From arts and craft activities, to quizzes to designing their own book covers, imaginative bookworms have been enjoying this week's celebrations.

The event acknowledges authors, illustrators, books and but most importantly, it celebrates the wonder of reading and encourages children to explore the pleasures of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own.

Events began on Monday and have run throughout the week with children dressing up as their favourite superheroes, designing bookmarks and covers to taking part in a World Book Day Craft Session.

Today from 11am Chester Lane Library will host a Read and Rhyme Time to give children a chance to dress up as a favourite character and have fun listening to stories and singing songs. There are lots of lovely story books for them to take home and read.

Meanwhile, Eccleston Library is hosting a similar event from 10.30am.

Children can test their book knowledge with a quiz and puzzles at Parr Library today and tomorrow, or they can have a blind date with a book, selecting one from the display – and the catch is that it won't be known which one they’ll be getting as it will be wrapped.

And at Rainhill Library from 10.30am today children can dress up a literary character and have fun listening to stories and singing songs. Books will be available to take home and read with your family.

St Helens Council’s cabinet member for regeneration, housing, planning and community safety, Councillor Richard McCauley, said: “World Book Day is a great opportunity to go down and support your local library and get involved in some fantastic activities.

“Reading is a wonderful gift that the council will continue to encourage.

"That is why it is important to highlight events like World Book Day – to get people together to appreciate the joys of reading.”
