THE shopworkers’ union has branded the upcoming closure of the Morrisons store in Earlestown as “devastating news” for its staff.

The Star reported in January that the supermarket, on Haydock Street, had been earmarked for closure.

Now the supermarket chain has confirmed that the store will shut at the end of this month.

A Morrisons spokesperson said: “Working closely with our colleagues we have looked carefully at whether the store can be turned around but unfortunately have found no way of making it viable. The store will therefore close on March 29.

“We are continuing to consult with colleagues to reduce the risk of redundancies and redeploy as many of them as possible around our business.”

Morrisons did not specify how many jobs will be at risk due to the closure with discussions over redeployment ongoing.

The Union of Shop Distributive and Allied Workers (USDAW) stated that it is supporting its members while discussions take place.

Joanne McGuinness, USDAW’s national officer said: “Morrisons’ closure of their Newton-le-Willows store is devastating news for the staff, who are now entering one-to-one consultation meetings.

“Our priority is to seek redeployment opportunities for members and minimise compulsory redundancies. We are supporting, advising and representing our members throughout this process.”
