POLICE stations across Merseyside have lowered their flags at half mast following the murder of an off duty officer in Liverpool.

Constable Neil Doyle died in hospital after he and two other off duty policemen were assaulted in the early hours of this morning (December 19).

One of the men suffered a fractured cheekbone while the other had a less serious injury. Both have since been discharged from hospital.

A murder investigation has now been launched.

Constable Doyle, 36, was based at Eaton Road police station in West Derby.

A 36-YEAR-old man who died following an assault in Liverpool city centre has been named as off duty police officer Neil Doyle.

Constable Doyle who worked from Eaton Road police station in West Derby was attacked in the early hours of this morning (Friday, December 19).

Two other men who were with him at the time were also off duty officers. They were also assaulted and taken to hospital where they are being treated for facial injuries.

Officers were called to Colquitt Street near the Aloha club at around 3.15am responding to reports of an assault.

All three were taken to hospital but Mr Doyle died a short time later.

A cordon is still in place at the scene while forensic examinations take place.
