AN AMBITIOUS ‘chain gang’ has been organised in the town with the mission to get more women on their bikes.

Set up by transport charity Sustrans, ‘Women on Wheels’ is a new friendly group that is aiming to boost cyclists’ confidence. It is open to any women aged 18 or over of all levels of ability, whether they are beginners who are new to cycling or haven’t ridden a bike for years.

Rides will be at a gentle pace suitable for all, on traffic-free cycle paths and quiet roads where possible. The club’s aim is to explore the town’s “lovely green spaces”.

Women on Wheels held its first gathering last month and meets at Taylor Park Cycle Hub, which is opposite the café, on Wednesdays at 10am and noon.

“This has been set up as there are not as many female cyclists around,” Annie Cousins, Bike It officer at Sustrans, said.

“The group is open to beginners or improvers.

“The first meeting went well with one lady who hadn’t been on a bike in years joining us.

“We are going to do the meetings once a month after Christmas hopefully.”

Health leaders are aiming to boost the number of a cyclists across St Helens, stressing it is proven way of improves fitness, while reducing stress and anxiety.

Anyone unsure about cycling on roads will be given guidance and advice.

Cyclists can bring their own roadworthy bike and the group recommends wearing a helmet. However, bikes and helmets are also available to borrow from the council’s cycle hub.
