THE Friends of Victoria Park will look to round off a big year for the park in style with a series of spooky Halloween-themed story-telling events.

Earlier in the year the park’s £4million lottery-funded restoration was unveiled, after eight years of campaigning by the Friends to make the park a central part of the community once more.

And two days of activity with a ‘spooky’ theme will cap off the landmark year with a ‘Storytelling Festival and Lantern Procession.’

On Saturday 25 Gate Lodge will host a creative writing workshop with former Star journalist Sue Gerrard, which will be followed by spooky tales of St Helens which will; be delivered by Sue from 1pm to 3pm.

The highlight will come in the evening when internationally acclaimed storyteller Dominic Kelly will hold an evening storytelling session in the Orangery, running from 6pm.

The following day will offer people the chance to tell their own stories, poetry or music from 2pm. There will also be a Make a Glass Lantern session as well as a children’s book character dress-up competition with the best three to win a prize.

There will then be a striking lantern procession before music on the bandstand will round off the weekend.

The event will round off a busy six months of activity with the park having hosted regular events since April.

“It will be the biggest event for the Friends being over the full weekend, we’ve never done anything on this scale before,” says Vikki-Watkinson Roberts, of the FOVP.

“It’s all based on a story-telling theme and we’re aiming for a “Spooky Lancashire” idea. We’ve done a whole load of events from April to October so I think for a small group like us it’s been quite a big thing for us to do.”
