FORMER pupils and colleagues have paid tribute to retired teacher Howard Thornthwaite who died after his car crashed into a railway bridge.

Emergency services were called to Peasley Cross Lane close to Langtree Park at around 4.30am on Monday following reports of a collision.

Mr Thornthwaite, 63, from Sutton, died at the scene.

He had taught at schools including Cowley and St Cuthbert’s before retiring earlier this year. Many of his former pupils took to the Star’s Facebook page to post their messages and memories.

Ray French, the former Saints player and BBC sports commentator, had known Howard for more than 20 years. The pair taught alongside each other at Cowley and they both shared a passion for Liverpool St Helens Rugby Union Club, where Ray is honorary president and Howard a keen supporter.

Ray, 74, described news of his friend's death as a “stunning shock”.

He told the Star: “He was a very good friend of mine and a colleague for many years. He was also a dedicated member of LSH. In my capacity there as honorary president he was always there to help whatever job needed doing and rarely missed a game home or away.

“He always did what he could for everybody whether it was a pupil, teacher, colleague or player at Moss Lane.

“He was a gentleman and a terrific friend who will be sadly missed.”

A statement issued by his wife of more than 37 years, Anne read: “Howard was born in Cumbria, taught technology for many years in St Helens schools before taking up the post of technician at St Cuthbert’s High School.

“Howard enjoyed supporting Liverpool St Helens at Moss Lane where he was a fixture on the touchline.”

A police spokesman said: “The incident was not weather related.”

Pat Lally acting principal at St Cuthbert’s said: “Mr Thornthwaite worked at St Cuthbert’s for the last 10 years and will be missed by the whole community. Howard worked tirelessly for our school and our thoughts and prayers are with Anne, his wife, who has also been a much valued colleague and friend.”
