A FLEET of ambulances were called to treat several people who were injured following a four car collision.
A passing off duty policeman was the first to stop at the scene of the crash on Parr Street and St Helens Linkway, which happened shortly before 1pm on Sunday.
The air ambulance was also called following reports that a pregnant woman, who was a passenger in one of the cars, was among the injured. However, the helicopter did not take anyone to hospital.
A 59-year-old man who was driving a Skoda suffered a cut above his eye.
A spokeswoman from the North West Ambulance Service said four people were taken to Whiston Hospital and one to Aintree.
However none of their injuries were said to be serious.
The eastbound carriageway of the link road was close while repairs were carried out to the crash barrier.
Three of the four cars had to be towed away leading to further delays. The road was re-opened shortly before 3.25pm.
