A HAYDOCK singer who thrilled the crowds at Langtree Park earlier this season is dedicating his new song to his late friend who lost his battle with depression.

Peter sang the song, Stand Tall, in the pre-match entertainment in Saints’ game against Huddersfield in May, before a month later performing at the DW Stadium before Saints’ derby match with Wigan.

But with the song due for official release on July 20, Peter was struck with the devastating news that his friend, Anthony Hughes, had taken his own life at age 30 just ten days before the intended release after losing a battle with depression.

Peter had known Anthony, who had played rugby at Wigan St Pats, since they attended Byrchall School together.

Following the tragic news, Peter decided to cancel the release of the song but now, a few months later Peter and Anthony’s mum Pat, has agreed to dedicate the song to his friend.

Peter received help from Neil Treppas, the bass player from the band Bauer to finish producing the song, which was completed at Redbridge Studios, over in Bolton.

Anthony’s next birthday would have been in October, so Peter decided that it would be fitting to release the song on October 1.

“I grew up with him at school and he was best man at my wedding. He was a great guy and always laughing and joking and just a complete person,” says Peter.

“He was a rugby lad through and through and lots of people miss him and his funeral was well attended and people spilled out on the streets.

“There are lots of ways people are paying tribute to Anthony’s life and St Pats have given up some land to be developed in to a family picnic area, in which friends and family will add ideas and suggestions to remember Anthony by.”

Stand Tall will be available with all major online retailers, including Amazon, Google Play and iTunes. The song is also on YouTuve and can be viewed below:
