A NURSING boss has undergone the gruelling Three Peaks Challenge to help raise money for a cause close to her heart.

Michelle Citrine, from Haydock, took on the arduous challenge which involves tackling the highest mountain in each of England, Scotland and Wales.

She was joined by a group of friends in climbing more than 11,000 feet and walking more than 26 miles to reach the summits of Scafell Pike, Ben Nevis and Snowdon as they raised funds for Cancer Research UK.

And the group completed the challenge in 22 hours and 45 minutes as they succeeded in beating the 24 hour target.

The achievement was done for a cause which means a great deal to Michelle who has had several relatives suffer from cancer in the past.

Her grandfather Stanley Garner, a former miner, died from lung cancer and her mum Maureen Rigby survived breast cancer in her thirties.

The event was organised by Michelle’s former colleague at Haydock Children’s Centre, Jude Harrison-Smith who pledged to raise £10,000 this year for Cancer Research UK following the loss of her mother to cancer of the womb in 2011.

“Together we raised more than £2,000 for Cancer Research UK,” said Michelle, who is currently nursery manager in Lymm.

“I’ve had family members who have lost their lives so it is a cause close to my heart and also my mum survived cancer when she was in her thirties.

“It was exhausting and the hardest thing I have ever done but it it was nice to do it within the 24 hours.

“But I won’t be doing it again soon!” added Michelle.

Jude is hosting one event each month until December and anyone still wishing to donate can do so at www.justgiving.com/Jude-Harrison-Smith.
