SPECIAL classes are available to improve quality of life for people who have had a stroke.

The service, delivered through St Helens Council's Public Health department, employs qualified instructors to facilitate the classes as well as specially trained volunteers.

Councillor Andy Bowden, Cabinet Member for Public Health and Wellbeing, said: “The volunteers all have physical problems themselves including cardiac, stroke, hip replacement and back injuries. They turn up every week without fail, and without them the classes would not run.

"The classes take a holistic approach which focuses on rehabilitation and we have had excellent results in clients increased mobility.”

Classes take place at the Finger Post Health Centre in the cardiac exercise room on Tuesday mornings at 9.15 and 10am. They cater for up to six clients per session, allowing carers respite to go for a coffee, shopping or chat with other carers.

The classes have been running for three years and have recently increased to a second class due to demand.
